Digital Flyers
A digital flyer is an invitation to an event circulated on social media. But invitations are associated with overused party imagery ... balloons, champagne glasses, confetti and swirly typography. How do we leave behind this played-out iconography and create a graphic that’s ... cooler? Using visual metaphor, and carefully selecting our imagery, we can suggest what the experience will be, evoke a feeling, make people curious about the event.
Digital collage is a quick and dirty way to get the word out, and Photoshop provides unlimited ways of editing and improving our designs. Using vintage and contemporary images, unusual image pairings, hand-painted or drawn textures, digital or found typography, we can create a compelling image without using clichés.
To prepare for this assignment we collaged by hand and examined the work of Romare Bearden, Hannah Hoch and David Wojnarowicz who used recycled imagery to create new meanings and critique cultural norms. This exercise helps students search for images with a critical eye, refining their tastes and becoming visual alchemists.
